The Free Cities: Overview: The topmost mile of "civilized" caverns are inhabited by the giants of the Free cities. There is no form of government in the cities and everyone lives in a complete anarchy, free to do whatever they please. There is a catch, however, you must be a giant. Due to their lack of government, thieves are also scarce. Any item that someone needs can be stolen and nothing can be done about it, except fight for it or steal it back. They are still extremely primitive in nature as can be gathered by their lack of ability to do anything organized. The giants of the Free Cities are a loud, raucous people, governed by no one but themselves. There is no sense of government on their minds and thus there is no ruling personage. They believe strongly in the principle of freedom, and exercise it with vigor towards people of their kind, but are quick and adamant to say they are a superior race. What this leaves for others in the Free Cities is slavery. Every non-giant, and this includes half-giants, walking on the streets of their cities will most likely be stopped and chained. The first giant to come along has the first opportunity to make the trespasser a slave, but frequently other giants come along and raise an uproar about wanting the slave as theirs. Quite often these disputes resolve without physical violence, though on occasion, the fights become so brutal that the fighters don't notice the would-be slave escaping. On rare occasions, when slave supply is low, a few giants gather together and form a raiding party to get more servants. This kidnapping generally takes only a few days, and sometimes the giants are killed in their venture. Even more rarely are the raids ever more successful than not; most of the giants end up injured and the new slaves are "poor stock" and are not able to endure their new master's demands. Government: None Population: approx. 500 000 giants (slaves make up another 10 000 or more) Armed Forces: There is no standing army of the Free Cities, mainly due to the lacking need for a organized unit. The giants generally fight their own battles using little outside help. Most of the time, the brute strength of the giants is enough to overcome their enemies. Notable Personalities: Arongto, the Bandit (898-1076): More infamous among the humans of the Draconian Empire, Arongto has successfully done over twenty raids into the neighbors below. Many giants are aware of the prestige linked with having successfully pulled off a raiding mission with Arongto. He is rumored to possess over a hundred slaves in his domain, which is worthy of mention itself. There isn't a more cunning, intelligent giant in all of the Free Cities, though that is still not saying much. His last claim before his death, Arongto stormed the Draconian Empire's capitol building and slew Emperor Dracos, before being struck down himself in 1076. Notable Guilds/Organizations: No known guilds exist in the Free Cities, and even if there were they would be comprised of few more than a couple giants. There are no libraries or magic guilds for obvious lack of giant spellcasters, and thieves' guilds are scarce due to a lack of organization among the thieving populace. Although religion is a much more personal issue, there are a few temple buildings within the Free Cities that provide a quiet place for worship and prayer.
